Understanding pattern hair loss
Pattern hair loss usually progresses gradually: a receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or both. The follicles at the back and sides of the scalp are generally more resistant to this process, which is what makes them useful for transplantation.
A hair transplant moves some of these follicles to thinning areas. It redistributes the hair you have; it does not create new hair. So how much can be achieved depends on your donor area and on how your hair loss is likely to progress.
How FUE works
In follicular unit extraction, individual follicular units (natural groups of one to four hairs) are removed one at a time from the donor area using a fine punch. Tiny openings are then made in the thinning area, and the grafts are placed at an angle, direction and density planned to look natural.
The hairline is designed before the procedure, taking into account your facial proportions, age, hair characteristics and likely future hair loss. The donor area is usually trimmed short beforehand.
Because there is no linear incision, FUE leaves small dot-like marks in the donor area, which are usually hidden by surrounding hair but may be visible with very short haircuts.
Who FUE may be suitable for
May be suitable if you have…
- pattern hair loss that has stabilised or is being treated medically
- a donor area with enough healthy hair
- realistic expectations about density
- good general health
Other steps may come first if…
- hair loss is diffuse, sudden or patchy
- there is an active scalp condition or undiagnosed cause
- the donor area is limited
- you have a bleeding disorder or an uncontrolled medical condition
What to expect
1
Before
A consultation to confirm the cause of hair loss and plan the hairline and number of grafts. You’ll receive instructions about medicines, smoking and alcohol before surgery.
2
On the day
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and usually takes several hours, depending on the number of grafts. You are awake and can usually go home the same day.
3
Afterwards
Small crusts form around the grafts and usually clear within about 7–10 days. Some swelling of the forehead is common for a few days. You’ll get specific instructions for washing, sleeping, exercise and returning to work.
4
Results
Transplanted hairs commonly shed within the first few weeks. New growth usually begins after about three to four months, and the result is typically assessed at around 12 months, sometimes longer for the crown.

How much does an FUE hair transplant cost?
The cost depends mainly on the number of grafts needed, which can only be estimated after an assessment. You will receive a clear estimate at your consultation.
Is it painful?
Local anaesthesia is used, so the procedure itself should not be painful. The anaesthetic injections and the first few days afterwards can be uncomfortable; this is usually managed with prescribed medicines.
How many grafts will I need?
It depends on the area to be covered, the density you’re aiming for and what your donor area can safely provide. This is worked out with you during planning.
Are the results permanent?
Transplanted follicles usually keep growing long-term, but hair that was not transplanted can continue to thin. That is why ongoing medical treatment is often recommended.
What are the risks?
As with any surgery, there are risks. These include swelling, temporary numbness, infection (uncommon), folliculitis, temporary shedding of existing hair and uneven growth. They are discussed with you before you decide.
When can I return to work?
Many people return to desk work within a few days, depending on the job and how visible the healing is to them.
