Hair loss treatment in Mumbai, starting with a diagnosis

Trichology care by Dr. Omkar Warang, DNB: finding out why hair is thinning or shedding, then treating it medically, non-surgically or surgically.

Common causes of hair loss

Pattern hair loss

Androgenetic alopecia: gradual thinning influenced by genetics and hormones, in both men and women.

Telogen effluvium

Increased shedding, often a few months after illness, stress, childbirth or rapid weight loss.

Alopecia areata

Patchy hair loss related to the immune system.

Scarring alopecias

Conditions that can permanently damage hair follicles, where early diagnosis matters.

Nutritional & hormonal factors

For example thyroid function or iron levels, which may need blood tests.

Scalp conditions

Such as dandruff, psoriasis and other conditions affecting the scalp.

How hair loss is assessed

Different types of hair loss can look similar but need different treatment, so the first visit focuses on finding the cause.

Treatment options

The foundation

Medical management

The foundation for most types of hair loss: treating the cause and using medicines to slow loss or support regrowth where appropriate. Other treatments are usually added to this, not used instead of it.

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a small sample of your own blood and injected into the scalp, as a supportive treatment for certain types of hair loss.

GFC

Growth factor concentrate is also derived from your own blood, processed to concentrate growth factors, and used as a supportive scalp treatment.

Dutasteride mesotherapy

Dutasteride is a medicine that reduces DHT, a hormone involved in pattern hair loss. In mesotherapy, very small amounts are injected into the scalp. It may be considered for selected patients after a medical review, including a discussion of possible side effects.

Exosomes

Exosomes are tiny vesicles involved in communication between cells, and are being studied as a regenerative treatment for the scalp. Evidence is still emerging, so Dr. Warang will discuss whether it is appropriate for you and what to realistically expect.

When a hair transplant is considered

For stable pattern hair loss with a good donor area, a hair transplant can restore coverage where medical treatment alone isn’t enough. Because Dr. Warang performs both, the choice is based on what suits your hair loss.

How much hair shedding is normal?

Losing around 50–100 hairs a day is commonly considered normal. Noticeably more shedding, widening partings or patches are worth having assessed.

It depends on the cause. Some types improve with treatment; for others the aim is to slow progression. In scarring alopecias, lost follicles cannot recover, which is why early diagnosis matters.

Hair grows slowly, so changes are usually assessed over several months rather than weeks.

Usually not. They are generally used alongside medical treatment, as part of a plan made for you.
