Understanding vitiligo
Vitiligo causes patches of skin to lose their colour because the pigment cells stop working. It is not contagious and is not caused by food. It can appear at any age and in any skin type.
Its course varies: some patches stay stable for years, while others spread. Early treatment can help, and many people regain some colour.
How vitiligo is treated
Treatment aims to stop new patches forming and to encourage colour to return.
- Topical treatments: creams and ointments for limited patches
- Phototherapy: controlled light treatment for wider areas
- Oral medicines: for spreading vitiligo, in selected cases
- Surgical options: for stable patches that haven't responded, in selected cases
