Understanding acne
Acne starts when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells, and bacteria and inflammation follow. It can cause blackheads, whiteheads, red pimples and deeper, painful cysts, usually on the face, chest and back.
Hormones, genetics, some medicines, cosmetics and stress can all play a part. Acne that leaves marks or scars, or that hasn’t settled with over-the-counter products, is worth having assessed.
How acne is treated
Treatment depends on the type and severity of your acne, your skin type and any marks it has left. Plans often combine more than one approach.
- Topical treatments: creams and gels that unblock pores and calm inflammation
- Oral medicines: for moderate to severe acne, with monitoring where needed
- In-clinic procedures: chemical peels, acne-control facials or laser and light treatment to support the plan
- Skincare advice: gentle cleansing and products that don't block pores

Questions
Frequently asked questions
More questions? Ask the clinic on WhatsApp.
Will acne go away on its own?
Mild acne sometimes settles, but acne that is persistent, deep or leaving marks usually improves faster, and with fewer scars, when it is treated.
How long does acne treatment take?
Most treatments need a few weeks to start working and a few months for their full benefit.
Does diet cause acne?
Diet is not the main cause for most people. For some, high-sugar foods or dairy may play a role, which can be discussed at your visit.
Can acne scars be treated?
Yes. Once active acne is under control, procedures can improve scars. See acne scar treatment.
