Understanding keloids
Keloids are raised, firm scars that grow beyond the original wound. They are more common on the chest, shoulders, earlobes and jaw, and in people with darker skin. Hypertrophic scars are raised but stay within the wound.
Keloids can itch, hurt and come back after removal, so treatment usually combines methods and continues over time.
How keloids are treated
Plans are tailored, as keloids can be stubborn.
- Steroid injections: to flatten and soften, usually a series
- Cryotherapy: freezing, often combined with injections
- Silicone and pressure: gels, sheets or earrings for ear keloids
- Surgery: only with other treatments to reduce recurrence
When to consider treatment
Consider treatment if…
- a scar is raised, growing or itchy
- an ear piercing keloid has formed
- a keloid is painful or bothers you
Good to know
- keloids can recur, so follow-up matters
- avoid unnecessary piercings or cosmetic surgery if prone
- results build over several sessions
