Understanding acne scars

Acne scars form when deep inflammation damages the skin’s collagen. They can be pitted (ice-pick, boxcar or rolling scars) or, less often, raised. Flat dark marks left after pimples are different: they are pigmentation, not true scars, and often fade with treatment.

Scars are best treated once active acne is under control, so new breakouts don’t undo the progress.
