Understanding psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term, immune-related condition in which skin cells build up too quickly. It commonly causes raised, scaly patches on the elbows, knees, scalp or lower back, and can also affect the nails. It is not contagious.

Psoriasis tends to come and go, and flares can be triggered by stress, infections, some medicines and other factors. Some people also develop joint pain or stiffness (psoriatic arthritis); tell your doctor if you notice this. Psoriasis can resemble other conditions, so a clear diagnosis matters.
