Understanding skin infections
Skin infections are caused by fungi (such as ringworm and fungal rashes in skin folds), bacteria (such as boils and impetigo) or viruses (such as warts, cold sores and molluscum). They are very common in Mumbai’s heat and humidity.
Different germs need different treatment. Using the wrong cream, especially steroid creams sold over the counter, can make some infections spread or keep coming back.
How skin infections are treated
Treatment starts with identifying the cause, sometimes with a simple skin scraping or swab.
- Fungal infections: antifungal creams, and tablets for widespread or stubborn infections
- Bacterial infections: antiseptic care and antibiotics when needed
- Viral infections: treatment for warts, molluscum or cold sores, depending on the type
- Prevention: advice on hygiene, clothing and reducing sweat to stop infections returning
When to see a dermatologist
Consider an appointment if…
- a rash keeps spreading or coming back
- itching is not settling with over-the-counter creams
- a boil is painful, large or recurring
- several family members have a similar rash
Good to know
- avoid steroid or mixed creams unless prescribed
- fungal infections often need several weeks of treatment
- finishing the full course helps prevent relapse

Questions
Frequently asked questions
More questions? Ask the clinic on WhatsApp.
Why does my ringworm keep coming back?
Often because treatment was stopped early, the wrong cream was used, or family members also have it. A complete course and treating the source usually help.
Are steroid creams bad for fungal infections?
Steroid creams can hide the rash for a while but let the fungus spread. Use them only if a doctor prescribes them.
Are skin infections contagious?
Some are, especially fungal and some viral infections. Your doctor will explain how to avoid spreading it.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the infection: from a few days for some bacterial infections to several weeks for fungal ones.
