Understanding nail problems
Nails can thicken, discolour, split, lift or change shape. Common causes include fungal infection, psoriasis, eczema, injury, frequent water exposure and some medical conditions.
Because many nail problems look alike, a correct diagnosis matters. Fungal nail infections in particular need the right medicine and patience, as nails grow slowly.
How nail disorders are treated
The nail is examined, sometimes with dermoscopy, and a nail clipping may be tested to confirm fungus.
- Fungal nails: antifungal tablets, lacquers or creams, depending on how many nails are affected
- Nail psoriasis and eczema: treating the underlying skin condition
- Brittle or damaged nails: nail care advice and protection
- Ingrown or painful nails: minor procedures when needed
When to see a dermatologist
Consider an appointment if…
- a nail is thick, discoloured or crumbly
- nails are lifting, splitting or changing shape
- there is pain or swelling around a nail
- a dark streak has appeared in a nail
Good to know
- nails grow slowly, so results take months
- a new dark streak should be checked promptly
- home remedies rarely clear fungal nails

Questions
Frequently asked questions
More questions? Ask the clinic on WhatsApp.
How long does fungal nail treatment take?
Usually several months, because the new healthy nail has to grow out. Stopping early is a common reason it returns.
Can nail problems be a sign of something else?
Sometimes. Nail changes can be linked to psoriasis, eczema, thyroid or other conditions, which is why diagnosis matters.
Is a dark line on the nail serious?
Most are harmless, but a new or changing dark streak should be examined by a dermatologist.
Can I wear nail polish during treatment?
Your doctor will advise; some treatments work better on bare nails.
