Skin concerns in children
Children’s skin is more delicate and reacts differently from adult skin. Common concerns include eczema, nappy rash, birthmarks, warts, molluscum, fungal infections, head lice, hair loss and, in teenagers, acne.
Many treatments are adjusted or avoided in children, so a dermatologist’s assessment helps choose what is safe and effective.
How children's skin is treated
Treatment is planned with parents and explained in simple terms to the child.
- Eczema and allergies: skincare routines and child-safe treatment plans
- Infections: treatment for fungal, bacterial and viral infections, including warts and molluscum
- Birthmarks and moles: assessment and advice on whether treatment is needed
- Teen acne: treatment suited to the child's age and skin
When to see a dermatologist
Consider an appointment if your child has…
- a rash or eczema that is not settling
- warts, molluscum or a spreading rash
- a birthmark or mole that is changing
- hair loss or patchy bald spots
Good to know
- adult creams may not suit children
- many childhood skin conditions improve with age
- a parent or guardian attends with the child
