Why hair turns grey early
Greying before the mid-20s in Indians is usually considered premature. Genetics is the most common reason, but nutritional deficiencies (such as vitamin B12, iron or copper), thyroid problems, smoking and stress can contribute.
Once a hair has turned grey it rarely returns to its natural colour, so the aim is to find and correct any contributing cause and slow further greying.
How premature greying is managed
The focus is on finding causes that can be corrected.
- Tests: blood tests for vitamin and thyroid levels when indicated
- Correcting deficiencies: supplements or diet changes if a deficiency is found
- Lifestyle advice: stopping smoking and protecting hair from damage
- Cosmetic options: guidance on safer hair colouring

Questions
Frequently asked questions
More questions? Ask the clinic on WhatsApp.
Can grey hair turn black again?
Usually not once it has fully greyed, although correcting a deficiency can sometimes help early on.
Is premature greying a sign of illness?
Often it is genetic, but it can be linked to deficiencies or thyroid problems, so a check-up helps.
Do oils or supplements reverse greying?
There is no proven way to reverse genetic greying. Supplements help only if you are deficient.
Is hair dye safe?
Most people can use hair dye safely; a patch test helps check for allergy.
