What molluscum is
Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection that causes small, smooth, pearly bumps, often with a tiny dent in the centre. It is common in children and can spread by touch, sharing towels or scratching.
It often clears on its own over months, but treatment can speed this up and stop it spreading.
How molluscum is treated
The method is chosen for the patient’s age and the number of bumps.
- Curettage or extraction: removing the bumps, often after numbing cream
- Cryotherapy: freezing the bumps
- Topical treatments: creams for some patients
- Preventing spread: advice on towels, scratching and swimming
When to consider treatment
Consider treatment if…
- bumps are spreading
- they are itchy or inflamed
- they are on the face or genitals
- you want them cleared sooner
Good to know
- new bumps can appear for a while
- children may need numbing cream
- eczema can make molluscum spread
